STF: Why did you decided to take part in this project?

TK: With my work I always reach out to reproduction techniques, and old techniques as well, like letter press, wood block printing, etching, etc. So it is a natural process for me, which made this project really appealing. Also, the idea of collaborating with someone that I cannot directly communicate with is really interesting to me. This is especially interesting because we are talking about exchange and distributing knowledge and coming together to create something in a medium that is meant to communicate information while we are not able to communicate with each other directly. The letterpress is actually the mediator between us. Of course, there is also the lead letters that I cannot read, or have a very clear understanding of. So I am also interacting with something that I don’t totally understand. All these things make this project quite interesting for me. I think this will create a very fruitful environment.

STF: Is this way of collaborating normal for you?

TK: It is really strange not to be able to see or physically interact with the letterpress machine or the letters. It feels very distant. The sketching is completely off, but that is also the exciting part. It really becomes a collaboration, but it is not just me designing something and then sending it to the printer. At least this is how I feel. It is very open in a way.

STF: For this collaboration, because there is so much distance between you and the letterpress and the letters, you really have to trust the person who is going to press it. This is really project about trust as well.

TK: Yes, very much so, and that also makes it interesting. This is really the first time that I have done a collaboration like this. Of course it is quite normal to collaborate with people from different techniques or skills, but in this case the design is so interwoven with the techniques and the construction, like the plates and the combination of the lead. Usually when working with letterpress you are really restricted to the collection of lead that is available. But now I can custom the cliches, that allows me to really put more of myself into the design. I feel like this adds another layer of dialogue.

STF: In a way you can say that the physical distance between you and Ojika Kappan, also gives you a great deal more freedom to explore and experiment.

TK: Yeah, exactly, exactly.

STF: Is there anything you want to say to the people of Ojika? TK: I feel very happy that I can be part of this. It looks like an amazing place. I am also so happy that it exists on such a big scale, and that it is being passed down from generation to generation. So I am really glad that I can collaborate with such an interesting party.
